Candace Sears, CPA, CA is the first-ever recipient of the new CPA New Brunswick Emerging Leader Award, honouring members who have brought distinction to the profession early in their careers. \nAbout Candace\nCandace is the Senior Manager, Canadian & US Taxation for KPMG in Fredericton. She was previously chosen for the Women in Line for Leadership program, participated on the Senior Management Development Committee, brought the US tax practice to New Brunswick, and is known for helping New Brunswick companies expand on a global scale.\n\nCandace's experience with international companies includes clients in Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Kuwait, New Zealand, and the United States. She regularly travels throughout Canada, and works remotely, in order to participate on unique projects. \nBringing that expertise back to New Brunswick helps show that we have the best in class, right here in our own back yard. Candace's work on projects such as these also give her opportunities to make contacts in industry and specialty practitioners such as transfer pricing, global mobility, etc. \nHaving these resources available to her also means that New Brunswick companies can get top-level advice. It elevates the transactions they feel comfortable in undertaking, and helps them grow their businesses faster, since they can focus on operations knowing they have KPMG's full support.\nCandace also uses her expertise to encourage knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, tax. Many of her past students have gone on to become CPAs specializing in taxation. In fact, one of Candace's first students recently became a Senior Manager at another firm, proof that she has a hand in building and growing the future leaders of our province.\nShe is a professor of taxation at the University of New Brunswick and has designed courses for full online delivery as well as the traditional in person classes.\n\nCandace also teaches and develops content for the CPA Program and In-Depth Tax Program, and acts as the Lead Facilitator across Canada on several CPA Canada tax courses.\n\nShe continues to develop her credentials as an expert in addition to her CPA designation by obtaining her US CPA (Illinois), a Diploma in University Teaching, an MBA, and is midway through a Masters in Science (US Tax). Her masters thesis was on corporate tax loss transfers in Canada.\nLeadership\nCandace has demonstrated great leadership by being primarily responsible for growing the cross-border practice in New Brunswick, with guidance from regional practice leaders in Ontario. \nHer focus on being in the community and growing her practice has led her to begin a mentoring program at KPMG, where she meets with up-and-coming managers on a regular basis to help clear some of the roadblocks to their success, and acts as a sounding board for issues they may be facing.\nCandace was a University professor and a Senior Manager only 3 years post designation, and, as a senior manager at a big four firm, Candace's selection for several prestigious advancement committees seems to suggest that her career is progressing at an accelerated pace.\nShe is also recognized in the community as a leader. She was invited to participate in exclusive events such as a NAFTA round table with MP Andrew Lesley by the Chamber of Commerce, and to a round table on the advancement of women entrepreneurs and innovation by Ignite Fredericton. \nThese opportunities have given Candace the chance to speak to decision-makers about issues that matter most to her clients in order to facilitate change.\nVisibility of the Profession\nCandace has brought visibility to our profession by being a leader in KPMG's Fredericton office, and in being known by both CPAs and the general public for her volunteering, teaching, and as a representative for KPMG.\nShe is present in the community in a variety of ways that showcase the expertise of CPAs, including:\n\n Energia Ventures Mentor, a UNB program to assist high potential startups in developing their business and making connections in Fredericton.\n Ignite Fredericton Export Igniter Program, a three-month program designed to help established companies develop exports to the United States. Candace lectured at this program for the last two years to assist companies in understanding the tax impacts of export.\n Candace regularly presents to bankers, lawyers, and industry associations such as Opportunities NB. These presentations help highlight the expertise that CPAs bring to the table, and make us top of mind when their clients find themselves in need of advice. They also build trust in our profession.\n Her volunteering efforts give an opportunity for the general public to see the how being a CPA can help contribute to an organization. For example, the Chamber benefits from Candace's perspectives on public matters as a result of the feedback she receives from her clients about their daily issues, and her insight into our financial system. Her willingness to contribute to the community also shows that our profession is one that gives back.\n\nCommunity Service and Awards\nCandace volunteers on several boards and committees, for organizations including the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, CPA New Brunswick, Junior Achievement New Brunswick, the Fredericton North Rotary Club, and Harvest Jazz & Blues.
