About the role

The Kingston Farmers Market is a Cooperative Association established on July 22, 1997 under the authority of the Cooperative Associations Act and Regulations of the Province of New Brunswick. 

As such, the Market is owned and operated by the shareholders of the Cooperative Association.

The mandate of the Kingston Farmers Market is to establish, maintain and operate a community owned Market on the Kingston Peninsula for the purpose of providing a market facility to enable local producers and vendors of agricultural products and crafts to sell their products on a profitable basis and to enable members of the public to avail themselves of those products at a fair price and in an agreeable manner.

RESPONSIBILITY

The Board consists of up to twelve members, including the executive: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The Treasurer will he responsible for the financial dealings of the market including: budgeting, income statements, expenses, and payroll along with all legislated reporting and filings. 

Additionally, the Treasurer will provide ongoing insights to the Board to help inform reasonable decision-making for all stakeholders (customers, vendors, employees, the Board and Shareholders).

TERM

Directors serve a three-year term, with ability to reoffer for two additional terms thereafter. New Directors are presented by the Chair of the Nominating Committee either at the Annual General Meeting (or mid-term as necessary) and are elected by members of the Board of Directors.  

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must hold CPA designation (in good standing)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act in the Treasurer capacity for the Kingston Farmers Market
  • Monitor Board policies, and alignment with applicable related legislation
  • Attend monthly Board meetings, as well as the Annual General Meeting
  • Prepare and present financial report at Board meeting
  • Actively participating in the health of the Market
  • Lend expertise in planning and reporting that provide insights to inform Board decisions
  • Maintain positive relationships with the Board and market staff
  • File necessary financial reports, tax reports and audits as applicable
  • Effectively perform payroll function for small staff and prepare T4 summaries
  • Prepare HST filings and year-end HST return
  • Prepare corporate tax returns
  • Perform bookkeeping (using Simply Accounting) including bank reconciliations, collect, post and pay invoices, post entries, prepare F/S
