President and Chief Executive Officer, NB Power; Fredericton

Accounting / Finance / Management

About the Employer

NB Power, a Crown Corporation owned by the Province of New Brunswick, is the largest electric utility in Atlantic Canada. The utility generates electricity at 14 facilities and delivers power to 400,000 direct and indirect customers.

NB Power is in the midst of unprecedented change as it evolves beyond its roots of generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, increasingly emphasizing renewable energy, new energy services, and customer-centered ways of serving its clients.

About the role

With the upcoming retirement of the incumbent CEO in 2020, NB Power is now seeking a new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This position is one of Atlantic Canada’s most complex leadership roles.

The CEO of NB Power, through his or her decisions, affects the lives of almost every New Brunswicker and every New Brunswick business 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is accountable for the leadership and management of all aspects of the company, including strategic direction, operational and financial performance, and safety.

Qualifications

For this critical position, the Board is seeking someone who has:

  • Experience at a senior executive level in a large, complex environment, ideally one that is subject to considerable regulation and may or may not be in the electricity sector
  • Experience leading transformative change
  • The ability to create a compelling vision and a coherent long-term strategy, and to align an organization behind the strategy, while inspiring public trust

A multi-faceted role of this kind requires a broad array of senior executive attributes including financial and political savvy, business acumen, customer focus, capacity to deal with many complex issues, ability to use or amend organization structure to maximize efficiency, capacity to focus and prioritize, and ability to manage people effectively.

This includes the ability to provide clear leadership direction and hold people accountable, ability to compartmentalize, ability to solve problems and make tough decisions. Proficiency in both official languages is not required but would be a considerable asset.
